Scatter Joy Project

What is the Scatter Joy Project?
The History of Cosmos in Fouriesburg
Every autumn, the rolling fields around Fouriesburg transform into a sea of pink, white, and purple cosmos. These delicate flowers were never planted intentionally—they arrived with the ox-wagons of the Anglo-Boer War in the late 1800s, carried in the horse and cattle feed imported from Argentina. Over time, the seeds took root in the fertile Eastern Free State soil, and today they bloom freely along farmlands and dusty roads, painting the landscape with joy and resilience.
For locals, cosmos is more than just a flower, it’s a reminder of history, endurance, and the natural beauty that makes Fouriesburg so special.

Inspired by the fields of cosmos that grace Fouriesburg each year, the Scatter Joy Project invites visitors to carry a little piece of that beauty with them. Guests are encouraged to buy a biodegradable packed of cosmos seeds and scatter them on their walks in the area or scatter them in their gardens at home, and share in the joy these flowers bring when they bloom.

It’s a simple act of kindness, spreading beauty, connection, and a living reminder of your time in Fouriesburg. Visitors are then encourage to visit year after year and enjoy the legacy they helped plant, one small seed at a time.

Plant a seed, leave a memory!
With every handful of cosmos you scatter in the Fouriesburg Countryside, you become part of a living story that blooms year after year. Return each Autumn to see the fields painted in colour. Your flowers, your joy, you legacy in our land
